Over at the UK Anti-Porn Feminists site, someone takes the time to explain stuff to a man who doesn't get it

Someone actually to the time and energy (yet again) to address common male privileged remarks, misunderstandings, excuses, apologies for, and explanations of "why pornography isn't all that harmful, really".

The discussion is too graphic for my blog, so I'll just link to it here. The discussion contains "graphically" pornographic terms and addresses many rapist behaviors common to the industry run by corporate pimps, and made profitable by the purchasers and procurers of women sold to the public as if they were wh*res.

Please keep in mind that there is no clear or definitive, or even marginal separation between "pornography", "prostitution", sexual trafficking, and sexual slavery. Anyone who tries to make a case that these social/political phenomena are distinct doesn't operate in that world at all.

Here's that discussion.

I personally don't use the word "dumb" that way. But as I do use terms like "idiot" I don't suppose I'm in the best position to call out that sort of gross ableism. Or, maybe I just did. But I too use language that is historically loaded with meanings that cause people discrimination and other forms of direct, personally experienced harm and pain.

I will use a term like "bastard" even though the meaning is originally deeply misogynistic. And I will use "idiot" and similar terms, even though they are all historically horribly ableist and discriminatory against people who have appeared (to often evil psychiatrists who got to categorise and stigmatise people who were "different") to have various levels of impairment in mental cognition resulting in them being treated as things, not as human beings. I think that history is deplorable, and the more I think about it, the less I want to use those terms. So maybe I'll stop. We'll see.

And on goes the struggle towards a more humane, sustainable, and less atrocity-soaked world.

  1. Hello,

    Thank you for the link.

I hadn't even thought of the possible connotations of the word 'dumb', so thank you for pointing that out.
