Why More Listening, More Honesty, More Time, and More Abuse Clearly isn't the AnswerUnknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger4125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744114065733119575.post-45045380978561806472013-09-06T15:08:46.130-04:002013-09-06T15:08:46.130-04:00Hello Liz,

I agree with you 1000% (if there can be a 1000%!).

I feel your analysis is spot on and thank you for doing the research re: Flickr.

Last week I sent Hugo (directly, via email) the links to my two recent posts about him, letting him know that I felt he would benefit from reading them. I also emphasized his need to stop seeking attention from the outside world as it's likely to only feed the problem, not the solution--as you well express. So I hope he does read this post and also the comments, especially yours.
Julian Realhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02933612851144914687noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744114065733119575.post-52536116762201622052013-09-04T19:34:51.240-04:002013-09-04T19:34:51.240-04:00I'm coming late to this story, having no knowl...I'm coming late to this story, having no knowledge of Hugo Schwyzer, who he was or that he had a blog. I was curious after I read an article about his Twitter "meltdown" and have been curious about him and the response to his public "confessions".

A couple things I noted rummaging through old blog posts and his Tweets. He confesses to, at the minimum, 11 confinements in hospitals or facilities due to mental illness. It could be more. I am amazed that someone with this history is employed at a college. I'm aware of ADA law that protects individuals with self-identified disabilities but "accommodation" is different from "tolerating" much of his behavior which was self-destructive. The fact that he reportedly confessed he tried to kill himself and another person in 1998 to HIS CHAIR and DEAN and wasn't reprimanded is a sign of privilege.

I looked through his Flickr account and my rough estimate is that he is in 90-95% of his photos that he has uploaded. That seems very high to me as most of my photos are of family and friends. The message I get is that this is a person who needs attention, to be in the spotlight, to be the focus, whether that is good (praise) or bad ("I'm so, so bad").

What I think would be appropriate, for his own healing and that of everyone else is to--Be quiet. Stop drawing attention to himself. Meditate. Listen to other people. Focus on what you can do for others instead of who is reading your words. It's not a matter of whether you are "good" or "bad" or "redeemed" or "recovering"...because that makes it all about you which feeds his narcissism.

I have very little confidence that Schwyzer can fade into the background for a year or two. He seems to need an audience, even one that criticizes him. And while I'm sure he still has his fans who are cheering him to recover his life but at this point, I think they are just enablers.Lizhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04965005623656692769noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744114065733119575.post-27116357623291540292013-08-29T22:44:56.125-04:002013-08-29T22:44:56.125-04:00You're certainly welcome, ptittle.
